Little did Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev know when he first published his new 'Periodic Table' in 1869 that it would go on to become the most recognized scientific document in the world. Quite an achievement when you think about it. Personally, I've found this table to be basically indecipherable (apart from maybe 3 minutes during a physics class back in secondary school (High School)). So I've decided to try and give a very simple explanation of the table - here goes.... Mendeleev, like the true genius he was, somehow managed to make something incredibly complex into something most ordinary people could understand. He organized his table like a big grid with rows and columns. Each row and column has specific characteristics. For example, beryllium (Be) and magnesium (Mg) are found in column two and share certain similarities while potassium (K) and calcium (Ca) from row four share different characteristics.
When you look at the periodic table, each row is called a period and even though they skip some squares in between, all of the rows read left to right. All of the elements in a period have the same number of atomic orbitals. For example, every element in the top row (the first period) has one orbital for its electrons. All of the elements in the second row (the second period) have two orbitals for their electrons.
Each column is called a group. The elements in each group have the same number of electrons in the outer orbital. Every element in the first column (group one) has one electron in its outer shell. Every element in the second column (group two) has two electrons in the outer shell etc.
The first 94 elements exist naturally, although some are found only in trace amounts and were synthesized in laboratories before being found in nature. Elements with atomic numbers from 95 to 118 have only been synthesized in laboratories or nuclear reactors. In this periodic table the atomic weights of the elements are rounded to 5 significant figures. Hope this explanation helps:)
